Workshops

I welcome opportunities to give workshops on digital mapping, dynamic Powerpoint presentations, and document organizing using Devonthink. Contact me if you are interested (sdevera1@uci.edu).

Mastering the Art of Dynamic Presentations is tailored for academic job seekers, instructors, and conference presenters. This workshop harnesses Microsoft Powerpoint’s hidden creative tools to help participants create impressive and effective presentations. For samples of my creations, click here.

Archiving Your Archives Historical research has undergone a profound transformation. Researchers now have access to vast amounts of historical data, documents, and archives.  We need robust software apps to effectively organize, annotate, tag, and analyze our multi-modal files. In this workshop, we will be exploring best practices for collecting and inputting documents using Devonthink and Zotero–apps used by savvy scholars to get their dissertations and books done.

Introduction to Digital Mapping for Historians: From Google Maps to ArcGIS

This hands-on workshop will introduce historians to essential digital mapping tools and their applications in historical research and presentation. Participants will explore three key platforms: Google Maps for creating custom maps and adding historical markers; KnightLab’s StoryMap JS for crafting narrative-driven, interactive maps; and ArcGIS for more advanced spatial analysis and historical data visualization. The workshop will introduce basic practices of data collection, map rendering, and publishing. My goal is to get you started on how to create compelling, data-driven maps that bring historical information to life.
